Illinois Signs Anti-AI Therapy Law While APA Jumps Into AI Hype

In August, Illinois became the first state to pass a law that intends to ban artificial intelligence (AI) services such as chatbots from offering emotional or mental health support to consumers.
The only problem? It is completely unenforceable.
The Illinois law, Wellness and Oversight for Psychological Resources Act, seeks to prohibit anyone from using AI to "provide mental health and therapeutic decision-making."
What the law says
The law attempts to regulate speech between a company and an individual by defining "psychotherapy services" as anything that may "improve an individual's mental health."
