Advocates express concern about autism database proposals

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has drawn the ire of autism advocates and mental health professionals with his comments about the autism population and the Trump administration’s proposals to create a national database or registry to study the causes of autism spectrum disorder.
“Autism is a spectrum — not a sentence, and no one’s worth is measured by their ability to meet a specific, neurotypical standard of success,” said Lauren C. Solotar, Ph.D., ABPP, president and CEO, of the May Institute, a Randolph, MA-based nonprofit that provides educational, rehabilitative, and behavioral healthcare services to autistic individuals and those with other special needs.
